action 2: Request an Investigation of Donald Jr.

  • Week of July 16, 2017

Well, it’s true, the apple doesn’t fall far from the Trump. This week we learned that Trump’s son, Donald, Jr., colluded with the Russians to steal the 2016 Presidential election! Let that sink in for a moment. That’s right, Trump, Jr. met with a Russian lawyer with ties to Putin, who was “part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump” and promised “sensitive information” about Clinton. This was not ordinary opposition research -- this was a crime. Russian agents presented him with a choice: commit a criminal act (accepting something of value from a foreign government to influence our elections) or refuse to indulge a foreign adversary’s request. Junior’s response was: “I love it.” He then went forward with the meeting.

This is not normal, but also not surprising. As this Politico article details, Trump has been rooted in Russia for decades. It is unclear whether Special Prosecutor Robert Mueller’s existing investigation will cover these crimes, so it is important that we all get an answer. To be clear, whether or not this was treason, it was a criminal violation of federal election laws, which prohibit anyone from soliciting or accepting a contribution from a foreign national.

A bipartisan letter requesting a Department of Justice investigation into these meetings would show Americans that our Senate is serious about protecting us from treason and criminal interference in our elections.

All-of-us must protect our country from these crimes. Here’s how:

  1. Say this out loud -- “This is not normal. This was a crime.”
  2. Call and your senators and ask them to send a letter to the Department of Justice, supporting the complaint filed this week by Common Cause and requesting an investigation to determine what crimes were committed in these meetings.
