Shut Down Trump’s Threat of a Government Shutdown

  • Week of August 27, 2017

At another unhinged speech in Phoenix on August 22nd, Trump double downed on his promise to build the border wall -- "If we have to close down our government, we're building that wall," Trump said. What Trump didn’t say, however is that a shutdown hurts the economy and unfairly deprives federal government workers of their paychecks. The 2013 shutdown cost us 24 billion in economic output. Nevertheless, Trump is demanding that Congress approve funding for the wall, estimated at 26 billion.  But the true cost of the wall is the loss of dignity and our core American values--a price too high to pay. Keeping the government open and denying funding for the wall is ultimately in the GOP’s hands. If two-thirds of Senate and House Republicans decided that keeping the government open is more important than insisting on a useless wall, they could overcome Trump’s veto power. That is the kind of leadership that Americans deserve. Let’s make sure that the only wall that gets built is a wall-of-us.

Here’s how:

  1. Sign this petition.
  2. Call your Members of Congress and ask them to work in a bi-partisan way to pass a budget that prevents a shutdown but does not include any funding for Trump’s wall.
