Stop Trump from Creating a Nightmare for Dreamers

  • Week of September 3, 2017

Harvey hit Texas hard, but rather than focusing on the devastation in his state, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is sticking to his guns and leading an attack on DACA with nine other attorneys general. These Republican AGs are giving Trump an ultimatum--end DACA by September 5th, or face a lawsuit. If Trump, who has waffled on DACA, takes the bait, about 800,000 immigrants would lose their status as legal immigrants.

Here is a quick summary of DACA. After Congress repeatedly refused to pass the DREAM Act, in 2012 President Obama created DACA through an executive order. DACA gives unauthorized immigrants whose parents brought them to the United States before the age of 16 a chance to apply for legal status if they meet certain conditions, such as being in school. This group is often referred to as “Dreamers”. Paxton claims that Obama didn’t have the authority to create DACA. That is, of course, not legally accurate for reasons explained In a letter to Trump signed by nearly 100 law professors.

The good news is that on Friday, one of the ten Attorneys General, Herbert Slaterly of Tennessee, wrote a letter rescinding his support for the lawsuit. In that letter Slaterly wrote:

“There is a human element to this, however, that is not lost on me and should not be ignored. Many of the DACA recipients, some of whose records I reviewed, have outstanding accomplishments and laudable ambitions, which if achieved, will be of great benefit and service to our country. They have an appreciation for the opportunities afforded them by our country.”

Thank you Herbert Slaterly! 1 down, 9 to go... let’s see if we can get the nine Attorneys General who signed this letter to have the moral courage to end their senseless and cruel attack on DACA.

Here’s how:

  1. Research the state by state positive impacts on GDP that have resulted from DACA with this interactive map here.
  2. Check out United We Dream, the largest immigrant youth-led organization in the US, and support their work.
  3. If your Attorney General is one of the AGs attacking DACA, call them and use the script below.
  4. If your Attorney General is not one of the AGs attacking, call them and ask them to persuade the AGs who are. Use the script below.
