Trump insisted last Tuesday that a border wall must be part of any DACA deal, effectively using 800,000 dreamers as ransom. In case there was any doubt, Trump’s tweet that same day reinforced that he is not on the fence about holding dreamers hostage for his wall: "As I made very clear today, our country needs the security of the Wall on the Southern Border, which must be part of any DACA approval."
As a reminder, Trump’s wall would cost the American people 18 billion dollars (because Mexico kindly declined Trump’s demand to pay). But that isn’t the biggest price America would pay. An op-ed in the Washington Post summarizes how important Trump’s wall is to him:
It’s almost impossible to overstate the symbolic importance the wall holds for Trump. Throughout his campaign for president, he used it as a representation of everything he would offer his supporters: a way to keep out not only immigrants diluting the country’s whiteness but the very forces of modernity and change.
Trump’s 2,000 mile long wall would be a permanent, ugly, and undeniable symbol of a racist, xenophobic and irrational America. The wall would redefine what being American means, both in the US and to the rest of the world, and that is a price too high to pay. This isn’t just about Trump, it’s also almost impossible to overstate the symbolic importance that preventing the wall from being built holds for us as a nation. And as if the wall weren’t bad enough, Republicans are also refusing to protect dreamers unless they make wide-scale changes to family-based sponsorship laws and the visa lottery, making it more likely that families would be torn apart.
All-of-us must ask our senators to protect the dreamers now, in advance of the January 19 budget deadline, and to have the moral courage to tell Trump to dream on about his ugly wall! Let’s make sure that the only wall that Trump gets is a big, beautiful Wall-of-Us!
