Ask Congress to Shut Down Trump, Not Our Government!

  • Week of January 21, 2018

Republicans made history again! They control two branches of government, Democrats extended dozens of olive branches, but the GOP still managed to shut down our government. This is the first time that a shutdown occurred on the clock of the party that controls both houses of Congress and the White House. We are stumped as to why Republicans chose to shut down our government rather than shutting down Trump’s racist rhetoric and petulant insistence on a border wall.

As a reminder, last week Senators Dick Durbin (D-IL), Jeff Flake (R-AZ), and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) proposed a bipartisan immigration agreement that would have protected dreamers, who were brought to the US as children and have strong roots here. It also would have extended the CHIP program, which provides health insurance for children. But Trump, after waffling, chose to go out on a limb, hold children and dreamers hostage, and stand with immigration hardliners. That limb broke when he insulted African countries by calling them “s*holes” (or, perhaps “s*houses”). All of this has led to a total Republican s*show and a government shutdown. Rather than standing up to Trump (which they still can do), Republicans said they wouldn't vote on a bill that Trump didn’t support.

Government shutdowns are serious and have many negative impacts, including punishing innocent government employees and halting important research on issues like public health and climate change. Republicans (and the five democrats who voted with them!) can, however, turn over a new leaf. All-of-us must convince them to shut down Trump, and not our government.

Here’s how:

  1. Read this article to understand the effects of government shutdowns.
  2. See here to see how your MoC voted on Friday. 5 Democrats voted with the Republicans!
  3. Call your senators and keep fighting for dreamers and to not use children as bargaining CHIPs. Use this updated resource from our friends at Indivisible.
  4. Words matter. Commit to referring to the shutdown as the #TrumpShutdown.
