Let’s be clear--we love and respect our veterans and active duty military. Trump, on the other hand, has made it a habit to attack our military, from insulting gold star mothers and widows, to mocking war heros like Senator McCain for being captured, to banning transgender people from serving. The list goes on, making it difficult to camouflage Trump’s lack of respect for our military. Feeling like he wanted to get his dictator on (and still jealous of the Women’s March 2017 and 2018), Trump instructed the Pentagon to throw a large-scale military parade, it took it as a directive and are preparing options.
Throwing a war parade in the style of authoritarians? Sorry, don’t love that, Trump. Parades have been held at times to celebrate the end of wars (maybe we will have a love parade when we celebrate the end of Trump’s war on our democracy). A military parade would not honor our brave troops. Nor would it do anything to keep our country safe, and in fact it would take away time (and millions of dollars) from the central challenge of military readiness. That’s why an Army Times poll reports that almost 90% of its readers are against the idea. Retired Major General Paul Eaton also launched a brilliant attack when he said, “Our military is the very best in the world – they are not to be reduced to stagecraft to prop up Donald Trump’s image.” BOOM!
The Council of DC (the District’s legislature) is also against the parade, though the council can’t stop it, it did fire off this rocket:
The DC government will open on time today.— Council of DC (@councilofdc) February 7, 2018
DC Public Schools will open on time today.
Sadly, the Giant Tank Parade is cancelled. Permanently. pic.twitter.com/mQmElqs3Tt
D.C.’s Mayor Muriel Bowser (she’s the bomb!) also mounted her defense when she said, “Just like the wall, he will have to pay for it.”
Unfortunately, as the law stands the Mayor and the Council lack the firepower to stop the parade. But don’t retreat yet, reinforcements are on the way! Resentative Brad Schnieder (D) of Illinois, and Senator Ben Cardin (D) of Maryland both introduced bills in the House and the Senate on Thursday that would force Trump to return to his FOX (news) hole.
All-of-us must blockade Trump’s parade. Roger that?
1 Call your Senators and ask them to support Senator Ben Cardin’s bill.
2 Call your Representative and ask him/her to support Representative Schneider’s bill.
Keep it short and sweet. Say something like this -- “I am calling to ask Senator/Representative [_________] to support Senator Cardin/Representative Schneider’s bill to stop Trump from his dictator style military parade. It would cost the taxpayers millions of dollars and, from respected military veterans to the general public the message has been clear--This. Is. Not. Normal.
