Support the Freedom of The Press

“Freedom of the press is one of the greatest bulwarks of liberty, and can never be restrained but by despotic governments.”
- George Mason

Many (many) things that Trump does threaten democratic values but perhaps the most dangerous is his constant attack on the press. As the Mueller investigation draws closer, Trump’s attacks on the watchdogs of our democracy have been growing stronger and more disturbing:

This week Human Rights experts at the United Nations strongly denounced Trump’s treatment of journalists. David Kaye, the UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression and Edison Lanza, the IACHR Special Rapporteur for Freedom of Expression issued a joint statement in which they warned that “these attacks run counter to the country’s obligations to respect press freedom and international human rights law.”

Dictators gain power by denying the truth and creating an alternate reality. A constant attack on the press is essential to that strategy. That’s why all-of-us must fight for our democracy by fighting for a free press.

Here’s how:

1 Learn about and donate to organizations which support free press such as The Reporters’ Committee for Freedom of the Press. For more organizations, see this article.

2 If you have friends or family who are repeating Trump’s attacks on the media, rather than laughing it off, try to explain to them why their words are so damaging to our democracy.
