"Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope.” Maya Angelou
"We don't govern by temper tantrum..." Senator Schumer
The first order of business of the newly-Democratic-controlled House was to introduce The For the People Act, a sweeping bill that would expand voting rights, crack down on gerrymandering, curb the influence of money in politics, and require sitting presidents and presidential candidates to release their tax returns. (Can I get an amen?!) Although it has a snowball’s chance in hell to pass in Mitch McConnell’s Senate, it is a strong signal of Democrats’ commitment to push back on Republican efforts to undermine the democratic process.
Another strong signal was their second order of business: passing a funding bill to end the government shutdown … notably without funding for Trump’s wall, for which he’s been holding the government hostage for weeks and has vowed he will continue to do for “months or even years” if he doesn’t get his wall. Rep. Hakeen Jeffries (D, NY) put it well: “What Donald Trump and the Republicans want to do is waste $5 billion in taxpayer money on an ineffective, medieval border wall that is a 5th-century solution to a 21st-century problem.”
Make sure that our government gets reopened and the only wall that Trump gets is a big, beautiful, Wall-of-Us!
