The Green New Deal, a proposed bill that is being catapulted into the public eye by young hot-shot Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), could be the key to saving our planet. It is the first piece of environmental legislation since 2009, when the American Clean Energy and Security Act died in the Senate. The Green New Deal is poised to unite labor and environmental concerns by “decarbonizing” our economy and creating a new job market in clean energy.
If uncompromising environmental legislation isn’t passed and we don’t radically reduce our carbon footprint in the next 10 years, we are facing an irreversible environmental catastrophe. And as consumers, we must support legislation that puts the fire under the a$$es of the main perpetrators of climate change -- just 100 companies are responsible for 70% of global emissions, the biggest offenders being Big Oil.
Rep. Cortez intends to form a bipartisan committee to work on this Green New Deal. She doesn’t want any congress-people who have taken money from oil or coal, as she doesn’t want to water down the legislation. Nancy Pelosi also intends to form a less ambitious select committee to confront climate change. While Cortez and the Green New Deal are accused of being too radical-- even on the left--we don’t have time to compromise on this issue. Speaking as a young person (Wall-of-Us’ high-school intern!), nothing is too radical if it saves our world.
Let’s show our newly elected House of Representatives that we mean business! All-of-us must lay the heat on our government and on companies to cool the planet down!
1 Call your representatives and demand environmental legislation that shifts our country entirely into green energy within 10 years. If you like, use this script provided by the Sunrise Movement.
2 Consumers (that’s all-of-us) bear responsibility here too, to drastically reduce our oil and plastic consumption. Use this guide to start reducing your plastic waste and therefore, your use of crude oil. Challenge yourself and don’t purchase any plastic for a whole week!
