From dog-whistle politics to refusing to disclose the identity of whistleblowers, the Trump Administration is far from being as clean as a whistle. (We expect a whistle from you for that play on words, by the way)!
As all-of-us know by now, an intelligence committee whistleblower has reported that Trump pressured the president of Ukraine to investigate the business dealings of Joe Biden’s son in exchange for unblocking U.S. aid to the country. The recently (Trump-)appointed acting director of national intelligence, Joseph Maguire, is now blocking the House Intelligence Committee’s attempts to subpoena the complaint, in violation of the 1998 Intelligence Community Whistleblower Protection Act. High crimes and misdemeanors, indeed.
Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has been soft pedaling on impeachment, citing that public support is conflicted (that is, Democrats are all in but independents are not) and that the path to a majority vote on articles of impeachment is arduous (it runs through purple districts). But one thing is for certain: Democrats' continued decision not to impeach in the face of repeated lawlessness is an acceptance that we will never hold Trump and his party accountable. Democrats must stop whistling in the dark (that means pretending everything is alright).
Elizabeth Warren, on a break from her whistle stop tour, put it like this on Friday: "By failing to act, Congress is complicit in Trump's latest attempt to solicit foreign interference to aid him in U.S. elections. Do your constitutional duty and impeach the president.” AOC took it one step further on Saturday: "At this point, the bigger national scandal isn't the president's lawbreaking behavior—it is the Democratic Party's refusal to impeach him for it.” And Warren and AOC ain’t just whistling Dixie! (that means they are not BS-ing).
All-of-us must tell the Democratic party leadership to start whistling to the tune of impeachment.
