A nation can survive its fools and even the ambitious. But it cannot survive treason from within.
- Marcus Tullius Cicero
Holidays are over, the tree’s on the curb, candles packed away, its back to reality -- and back to Washington for Members of Congress, where a stalled impeachment is waiting for them. If all that eggnog has your brain a little fuzzy, you’ll remember that Nancy was waiting to send House’s articles of impeachment to the Senate until she received assurances that Mitch McConnell would conduct a real, fair trial in the Senate. But Mitch and Lindsey Graham have been fixin to make a mockery of the Senate impeachment trial process by pledging to not call any witnesses or do any investigation whatsoever. In fact, McConnell claimed today that he has the votes to force his witness-free sham impeachment trial through to the Senate, maybe even as early as tomorrow.
In an even weirder (and suspicious) turn of events, former White House national John Bolton just announced that he is willing to testify at President Trump’s Senate impeachment trial if subpoenaed. As you may recall, Trump ordered all his staff to stonewall Congressional subpoenas in the House impeachment inquiry, and many of them did -- including Bolton, who could be a potentially vital witness, with knowledge of Trump’s actions and conversations regarding Ukraine. House Democrats took that blatant violation of the separation of powers to court, and in late November a federal court judge strongly rejected the Trump administration’s argument that senior White House officials (even former ones) were immune from congressional subpoenas. Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson of the Federal District Court for the District of Columbia didn’t mince words: “Presidents are not kings. They do not have subjects, bound by loyalty or blood, whose destiny they are entitled to control.” Amen, sister.
But the fact is no one will testify if they're not called. Rep. Chuck Schumer summed it up: “Given that Mr. Bolton’s lawyers have stated he has new relevant information to share, if any Senate Republican opposes issuing subpoenas, they would make absolutely clear they are participating in a cover-up.”
All-of-us must resist the traitor(s) from within and push for a real and fair impeachment trial (and conviction) in the Senate.
1 Call your Senators ASAP and tell them you expect them to conduct a real trial in the Senate, which includes fact-finding and examining crucial witnesses like Bolton. Indivisible broke it down really well here if you need talking points.
2 If you live in a blue state, share this action widely on social media and with red and purple state allies so they can call their senators too!
