Poll workers are critical to free, fair, and efficient elections. The US is facing a record shortage of poll workers this year. Most poll workers are over the age of 60 and, in the era of uncertainty caused by the coronavirus, fewer are signing up. The stakes are even higher this year given Trump’s attacks on the US Postal Service and the unprecedented attempts to prevent black and brown communities from voting.
We are already feeling the consequences in several recent primaries. For example, 95% of past poll workers in Anchorage, AK, declined to work the polls this year and the state of Kentucky consolidated in-person voting in each county to a single polling place. We definitely need poll workers in Kentucky where I hear it’s Mitch-hunting season!
But there’s good news. Power the Polls has made it easy for all-of-us to step up to volunteer to woman (or man) a polling station.
